Going into Writing 001 class over Fall 2019 has been a demanding experience for me but with significant outcomes that helped me improve my English skills as well as become a critical thinker while gaining confidence in my writing abilities and my reading comprehension. A variety of activities like peer review, weekly responses, participation in class discussions, reading in class, and group assignments push me to get out of my comfort zone and challenge myself. Writing 001, being my fist writing class as a college student, required me to interact with the different aspects of language, which changed my perception of the English subject.
English was my second language, and I struggled a lot with it during previous years before this course. During High School, I tried to avoid reading every time I could, and writing was not one of my favorite assignments. However, in this course, I learn the importance of these activities. At the beginning of the semester, I struggled a lot of reading aloud in class, comprehending the different texts, and creating a good paper for my assignments. I needed to start preparing myself, so I began to read more often to improve my pronunciation. I looked for resources that would help me to improve my writing skills, like attend to study sessions or look for feedback. I began to explore my options to strengthen my abilities. The course required me to be more involved with the different aspects of the English language as writing and reading. Although I am more of a science person be more implicated with these aspects not only helped me to overcome my early struggles, they also engaged me to learn more about language.
Each reading activity and writing assignment shaped my perception of the importance of writing and reading. One of the most significant was the value of connecting with our audience. By understanding this fact, I realized how to create a good paper. It also helped me to comprehend texts better since I could create a context of passage based on the type of audience the passage was addressed to, or even sometimes, I could relate to some texts to myself. By reading the diversity of texts in this course, I developed a critical way of thinking and the importance of language in addressing our audiences, which I believe are qualities of an excellent writer.
In this portfolio, my objective is to show how I used the five learning outcomes: Process, Rhetoric, Collaboration, Craft, and Research Ethnics to grep my self as a reader and as a writer.
