Craft

As an English learner, I never felt engaged to be a writer or even write a paper. Grammar was one of the biggest challenges I had as a beginner. I knew that the structure of a sentence and the right punctuation are the basis to create an effective message and not a confusing argument. The wrong use of a verb, noun, or article always creates a sentence hard to read. Moreover, grammatical errors were pretty common and I always struggle with this process when I wrote a paper before Writing 001.

Writing 001, as previously stated, required me to be more engaged in English, so my essays could be objective and concise. I needed to acquire more vocabulary to present a nice work. A vast vocabulary was key to do not overuse a word keeping myself focus on the central topic and create persuasive work. The only way I could do that was through reading. I began to read before class to get a context of the class’ article or narrative and after class to review the texts and get a better understanding of the genre presented that day. Through reading, I could gain new vocabulary as well as develop my grammar.  I could explore the diversified genres from the texts offered in this class developing a better aesthetic on my papers. I also started to comprehend what words avoid when writing a particular genre and which would be more concise.  I also learned how to identify the rhetorical devices in a text to understand the author’s genre.

Reading different genres in this class also helped me to improve my rhetorical analysis learning about the different types of writing styles, allowed me to be familiarized with unknown words, and differentiate among each category and style. I learned how important it is to use transitional words between ideas to obtain a clear and strong paragraph, apply the right punctuation, and do not add extra words that will make our sentences wordy and long-winded. I could say that my English skills had improved in contrast to the beginning of the semester. I feel that I improved as a writer and as a reader gaining an interest in literature.  Now I review my work twice to make sure there are no flaws and to avoid choppiness.
