Process

One of the five learning outcomes that played the most significant role in my improvement as a writer and reader was Process. Writing and reading never were my strengths, yet in this class, I had to demonstrate my understanding of the multi-stage processes of critical reading, formal writing, and public speaking. After my first weekly response assignments, I realized that I needed improvement in my writing skills. My transition from Spanish to English affected the structure of my sentences, which gave my sentences an awkward meaning. Comments from my professor and peer review in class helped me to identify the sections I needed to improve on. After my first weeks, I always reviewed my new assignments, and I also compared them to my first weekly responses’ sentences, which my professor had commented to do not make the same mistakes. When I had to write an essay, I went to conferences one to one with my professor and looked for peer review. By reaching to people and accepting their feedback, I could adapt my style writing to a formal writing style and generate clearly and direct arguments on my classwork.

I also wanted to create strong sentences, but sometimes, my peers’ and professor’s feedback was not enough. I knew that an effective way to improve my writing skills was reading. I began to read my class assignments and other outside class books and articles several times to see how the author structured their sentences to have a good impact on their audiences. Highlight texts and make marginal side notes helped me to create persuasive sentences establishing my ideas clearly. By reading, I also learned how to connect my arguments to evidence, which would back up my claims making my essay stronger (Rhetoric). By half to the end of the semester, I started to notice my improvement.

By reading inside and outside of my class, I was able to develop my critical reading and thinking abilities. I learned how to identify the author’s purpose faster, which made it easier for me to understand the objective of the whole text. My necessity for improvement took me out of my comfort zone, which contributed to my confidence. When I looked for help, I interacted with more people becoming less shy each time. I learned to communicate with other different people improving my public speaking. I also discovered how to address my audience when writing a paper or giving a presentation in class.
