Research Ethics was the learning outcome that requires us the ability to apply a standard ethic research process in our work. This learning outcome was critical to avoid a subjective paper in Writing 001. The use of relevant online resources that could back up our claims in our written papers or spoken presentation was essential to present a proper assignment. At the beginning of the semester, it was hard for me to find a trustworthy resource on the internet since I was not used to it. During High school, I never got graded harshly based on the objectivity of my papers. Most of the time, all I did was free writing. I did not know how important it was to use the right evidence.
As the course continued over the year, I was more interested in how language affects our critical thinking. Since my group and I have chosen this topic for our presentation, we needed to investigate about the different aspects of language. Our online resources were unlimited. However, we needed to use only reliable resources if we wanted a persuasive presentation. However, find concise evidence for a broad topic as language was a challenge. Although we decided to do not use many online resources to avoid plagiarism and focused on scholarly articles, they did not contain enough information to present a strong argument. We decided to use the library’s databases. I learned to access the university library’s databases to look for more reliable research resources. I learned to narrow down the information based on what I need, choosing articles backed up from universities or social studies and not from magazines or unknown authors.
For my final essay, where I was required to use previous any class material we viewed over the semester to create my argument of what I think about language, I learned to analyze and cite texts using MLA format to back up my claims. Even though I struggle a little learning how to cite other people’s work and including them correctly in my paragraphs read again, analyze and summarize the diversified class material allowed me to present a strong essay in my essay baking up my thesis. I realized that by quoting different author’s narratives correctly, I gained credibility in my work and avoid plagiarism. Understanding research ethics was a useful tool to improve as a writer and to present an objective written or spoken work. It is not only to copy others’ work and use it as ours but it is to apply the right guidelines to use it with our own reinforcing our statement.
